After nearly five years of careful development based on client and distributor feedback, a new Measurand ShapeArray entered production this spring—SAAV. The model introduces three unique innovations: First, SAAV installs directly into new and existing conventional inclinometer casings without additional conduit or grout. Second, optional silent segments offer flexibility for users to control the length of the ShapeArray monitoring the location of the sensorized zone. Third, an upgraded MEMS sensor consumes less power and improves resolution.
The ability to install in conventional casings and control the sensorized zone with silent segments positions SAAV as an attractive ShapeArray model for clients with large sites, Jeffrey Barrett, Measurand’s Chief of Staff and Geotechnical Engineer said. Existing casings can be continued to be used with SAAV without modification or grout.
“SAAV is an ideal monitoring solution because you can deploy the ShapeArray directly into the existing infrastructure and you’re not grouting something in so that it can’t be used for its original purpose again if required,” Barrett said. “Anybody looking to automate inclinometer data would find SAAV ideal for a retrofit program from both a financial and safety point of view.”
SAAV’s robust joint construction allowed Measurand to develop a patented cyclical installation system—an innovation unique to SAAV—that allows SAAV to be installed into a range of conventional inclinometer casing diameters. The patented cyclical installation system zigzags SAAV into the casing, while a spring box firmly holds the joints in place. Measurand software tracks the medial axis in 3D, which produces traditional inclinometer plots.
“Installation is simplified,” Chris Gairns, Measurand’s Director of Sales, said. “SAAV comes off the reel directly into the casing and clamps in place.”
Optional silent segments were developed to offer the flexibility to control the location of the sensorized zone by increasing the length of the ShapeArray at the far-end. For example, if you’re looking to not monitor the last 10 metres of your hole, you’d attach on 10 metres of the silent segments to lift your reference point from the bottom of the hole to a useful point without additional grouting or ruining the hole. Silent segments provide flexibility and ultimately save the client costs.
“The big benefit of silent segments to SAAV is that clients can have the reassurance that they have the flexibility to get any length ShapeArray they want, without needing to send it back to Measurand to get retrofitted,” Gairns said.
